A post office plan to deliver mail to Manteca in 1949
His resignation comes as a surprise to those who have admired the work of city marshal Maro Litchfield in the town's history. A small salary resulted in his resignation from the office and he told the city trustees that he did not like it. According to Joshua Cowell, F. M. Roundtree will take over as mayor.
Organizers of the joint annual dinner of the chamber of commerce and Lions Club announced earlier today that all preparations have been completed for the dinner to be held at Hotel Manteca at 7 p.m. this evening. A. J. Whitaker, Lions Club president, will preside as toastmaster, and Modesto's L. M. Morris will speak on the main topic of the evening.
As the Manteca Chamber of Commerce's president for the past year, A. H. Veith handed over the gavel to his successor, F. Y. Kraft, at the monthly meeting last Thursday at the Hotel Manteca. As the outgoing president turned in his resignation letter, he thanked the directors and members for their loyalty and wished his successor the same.
It is being recommended to the department by an inspector to give Manteca city mail delivery even though the postal authorities have not yet approved the service. The department has not yet advised Postmaster Luck to establish a delivery service, so no further information can be provided at this time.
At Monday night's meeting of the Board of Trustees, an extensive discussion was held regarding what to do with the influx of new elementary school students. In Neil Hafley's opinion, another new school will be necessary before too long. There is a chance he might make it one more year without double sessions, but he will need more classrooms after that.
The MRPS Hall hosted the Jaycees 21 distinguished awards banquet Saturday night, honoring two of the highest honors the community can bestow upon its citizens. John Gatto, local manager of the Bank of America, was named Man of the Year. The Outstanding Young Man of the Year was named Duane Martin, of McFall, Burnett and Martin.
The John McFall Recognition dinner, which drew 780 friends of the former congressman to St. Anthony's Parish Hall on Saturday night, was hailed by its sponsor committee as a great success. There was no bitter reunion for McFalls after his defeat on November 7 by now-Congressman Norman Shumway.
A widened and safer Highway 120 bypass will require not only elected officials' efforts, but also the public's support. A group of elected officials, businesspeople, and local residents gathered at Carls Jr. restaurant in Manteca last week to discuss the status of the bypass improvement project and discuss funding options. Mayor Jack Snyder organized the meeting.
The reduction of class sizes and the growing number of residents are posing a double-edged sword to the Manteca Unified School District. Despite the addition of portables, elementary schools are losing blacktop and playing field space due to a lack of available locations. An elementary school request for 12 portable classrooms was unanimously approved by the district's board Tuesday.
In January, California experienced near-record highs, transforming the state from green to brown. Despite being the wettest month of the year, January could prove to be the driest ever for the crucial Sierra watershed. Water managers like Jeff Shields of South San Joaquin Irrigation District are worried about it.
